About Us

REBUILD.US is a national organization of disaster survivors and community leaders from the most climate-impacted regions of the country who have come together to build a new response to climate shocks to both care for people and win lasting solutions to our country’s biggest challenges.  At REBUILD.US, we treat each disaster as a moment of both trauma and devastation while also a window of immense possibility to change the future. We meet each climate shock with a deep commitment to care for people, deploy resources quickly, and organize communities for the long term to expand the public good rather than simply restore what existed before.

We carry out our work through three interventions:

  • We organize money: through our fundraising and grantmaking platform, we are advancing a new model for disaster response. We raise and move funds in 48 hours of a disaster to experienced, local leaders who are in the community before the disaster strikes and long after the headlines fade. We have raised and distributed over $16 million to 125 groups.
  • We organize people: we are the first national disaster survivors association, bringing survivors and our communities together to win a full recovery and a dignified life for all. Our growing membership, who have lived through hurricanes, floods, wildfires, and tornadoes, find community, share hard-won knowledge, and organize together so no survivor faces recovery alone.
  • We organize attention: through our creative command center, we are advancing a dynamic new model for strategic communications. We are building an always-on studio, deeply connected to influential creators who can amplify a new point of view about how the world understands disasters—what causes them, who is responsible, and what must change—while challenging the narratives and power structures that stand in the way.
In addition to these interventions, we are developing a private sector strategy and continue to work with state and local groups to prepare them to engage in climate shock moments to care for their communities and organize for power.

REBUILD.US is fiscally sponsored by Assets Under Movement.

Job Overview

The Communications Director is a member of REBUILD.US's senior leadership team responsible for executing REBUILD.US's communications, narrative, and brand-building strategy to advance our core theory of change: in order to advance a multi-racial, pro-democracy society and expand the public sector, we must seize climate shock windows to drive major political, economic, and social change.

We are seeking a communication expert and builder — someone exceptional at producing high-quality materials quickly, as well as working with a talented, diverse team spanning digital communications, social media, brand, design, media relations, narrative strategy, and influencer strategy to shape how those disciplines work together to execute a powerful communications program.

This role will lead a comprehensive communications program during climate disaster rapid response and “blue sky” periods to power our organizing, fundraising, and advocacy campaigns, and advance our overall narrative change and brand-building strategy. The Communications Director will bring a strong understanding of audience targeting, how to compete for attention in the new media landscape, along with a rigorous approach to goal setting, testing strategies, measuring impact, and integrating lessons learnt into the program.

This is a rare opportunity to play a meaningful role in shaping the political, cultural, and economic terrain of the country by redefining how we understand our new climate disaster-driven future, and to build the editorial and narrative infrastructure of a fast-growing national organization at a crucial inflection point.

Core Responsibilities

Strategic Communications
  • Develop and execute communications strategy aligned with REBUILD.US’s organizational priorities, theory of change, brand and narrative strategies.
  • Hold a bird's-eye view of the organization and an in-depth understanding of our main interventions and our brand and narrative strategies, and translate that into a clear, cohesive, and actionable communications plan.
  • Develop communications strategies for both rapid-response climate disaster moments and long-term “blue sky” periods.
  • Ensure communications effectively advance REBUILD.US’s organizing, fundraising, advocacy, and brand-building goals.
  • Introduce a lean-startup discipline to the organization by defining core value hypotheses, conducting quick and routine testing, and remaining nimble to adjust workflows.
Team, Partner and Vendor Management
  •  Manage the communications function — staff, strategy partners, vendors alike — setting day-to-day priorities.
  • Translate long-term strategy into day-to-day priorities and establish clear systems, workflows, and expectations with staff, consultants, and vendors.
  • Maintain systems and workflows and track projects across multiple partners, vendors, and teams; and ensure the program is advancing our short- and long-term strategies.
  • Assess REBUILD.US's communications infrastructure on an ongoing basis and evolve the strategy, systems, and team structure needed to keep pace with the organization's growth.
Social Media and Digital Communications
  • Craft and implement a dynamic social media and digital communication strategy, overseeing content creation, design, scheduling, and analytics to optimize reach and impact.
  • Oversee content creation, design, scheduling, and distribution across multiple platforms
  • Analyze and use insights from across platforms to optimize reach and impact.
  • Identify opportunities to translate attention and engagement into meaningful action.
Creative Command Center
  • Serve as the connective link between REBUILD.US and NewWorld, our partner that runs our creative command center.
  • Working closely with NewWorld and REBUILD.US’s staff and leadership team to ensure a consistent, compelling voice across earned, owned, social, and paid channels, and deploy sophisticated, innovative narrative and marketing tactics to steadily grow REBUILD.US's influence on public attitudes, policy, and behavior.
Content and Production
  • Oversee the full content lifecycle — either executing it directly or managing staff and vendors to execute — from strategy and ideation to creation, editing, design, and distribution.
  • Produce high-quality collateral as an individual contributor when necessary.
  • Align a team of staff and vendors to produce collateral and content.
  • Create processes to maintain strong editorial and brand standards while responding with urgency during rapid response moments.
Organizational Leadership
  • Serve as an active member of the senior leadership team, helping to shape the organization's strategic direction, organizational health, and culture.
  • Collaborate with peers to strengthen cross-team alignment, support effective organizational decision-making, and actively work to advance a high-performance and rigorous evaluation.
  • Contribute to a high-performing culture grounded in organizational values.
Minimum Requirements
  • 10+ years of experience in senior communications, editorial, or narrative strategy roles.
  • A track record of building and leading high-performing communications teams that span disciplines — digital, brand, media relations, and content.
  • 2+ years of experience supervising direct reports.
  • Proven ability to translate organizational and narrative strategy into editorial output that shifts public attitudes, media coverage, or policy outcomes.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with experience crafting communication and narrative materials that hold a distinct point of view and mass, popular appeal.
  • Comfort operating at strategic and tactical levels -- big-picture strategy and hands-on drafting and editing.
  • Deep commitment to disaster-impacted communities and to a survivor-centered, justice-oriented approach to recovery; direct experience with climate disaster response, organizing, or survivor communities is a strong plus.
  • Exceptional relationship-building skills across a wide range of stakeholders: staff, media, funders, movement partners, and survivors.
  • Experience working with membership-based organizations (including labor unions, community organizations)
  • Insight into what makes content land in a fractured, high-pressure media environment—and how to turn attention into action.
  • Appetite and ability to execute at a high level both during rapid response and shock moments, and during blue sky periods.
