About Capital for Sustainability

Capital for Sustainability (C4S) is a philanthropic initiative whose mission is to align private capital with sustainability goals, focusing on climate action in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The goal is to double private climate finance for the Global South in five years.

About the Chief of Staff Role

The Chief of Staff serves as a strategic partner to the Managing Director (MD), with responsibility spanning fundraising execution, financial and grants administration, and operational leadership for a small, fast-moving fund.  The role is responsible for translating organizational priorities into clear plans, coordinated workstreams and high-quality deliverables. The role carries end-to-end ownership of the funder pipeline (from prospect research through concept note drafting to outreach coordination and grant administration) alongside management of the organization's contractor and vendor relationships, internal systems, and event logistics. Given the size of the team, the role carries a high degree of independence, and the Chief of Staff is expected to convert high-level direction from the MD into concrete deliverables across a wide range of concurrent workstreams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead project management across key organizational priorities, developing workplans, timelines, milestones and deliverables and ensuring projects move forward from planning through completion.

  • Serve as an external representative of C4S, representing the MD as needed to manage multiple engagements.

  • Support funder outreach, concept note drafting, and pipeline management across a portfolio of institutional funders, including due diligence submissions and grant applications.

  • Manage grant and contractor financial administration: track budgets by funder, coordinate disbursements and payment processing through fiscal sponsors, and maintain compliance records for funds received.

  • Serve as a central point of coordination across internal and external stakeholders, ensuring clear communication, timely follow up and alignment on responsibilities and next steps.

  • In geographies where there is not yet a regional lead, sSource, contract, and manage in-country consultants supporting stakeholder mapping and market research across multiple geographies.

  • Build and maintain funder-facing materials, including pitch decks, one-pagers, and internal financial models, tailoring content for individual meetings.

  • Manage the organization's operational infrastructure, including IT administration, database maintenance, and website upkeep.

  • Plan and execute in-person and virtual events, including advisory committee meetings, an annual retreat, and participation in major sector convenings.

  • Prepare the MD for meetings and external engagements by coordinating materials, synthesizing relevant information, identifying outstanding decisions and ensuring timely follow-ups.

  • Support organizational build-out, including contributing to reporting-line decisions.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated commitment to climate action, sustainable finance, and LMI economies.

  • 5-7 years of relevant experience in climate action, finance, or the philanthropic sector.

  • Strong project management skills, with demonstrated experience taking complex projects from planning through execution.

  • Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and manage a high volume of concurrent workstreams in a fast-moving environment.

  • Ability to navigate across multiple technology and administer systems as necessary.

  • Experience in fundraising or business development with institutional funders.

  • Excellent written and visual communications skills in English, including for drafting concept notes, grant proposals, and PowerPoint presentations.

  • Working knowledge of financial modeling in Excel (e.g. budget tracking) and comfort managing multiple funder or grant budgets simultaneously.

  • Experience with contractor or vendor management, including scoping work, negotiating terms, and coordinating payment through third-party processors.

  • Working familiarity with database tools (e.g., Notion or comparable platforms) and general competence administering common productivity/IT platforms.

  • Experience planning in-person meetings or events (venue logistics, scheduling, materials prep).

  • Fluency in other languages, especially the five official U.N. languages, is a plus.
